Visions by Hearthlight

When down a lonely road I stepped with dread,
A glimmer from a cottage I detected
And with foreboding night before me spread,
I hastened toward it's radiance, reflected
In a draperied, leadened pane of antique glass,
It's light a consolation to be savored;
In moonless, starless gloom, I would not pass
Before I'd felt it's warmth, so there I wavered.
A lamp seen through a curtained window glows
More softly still than starlight's sparkling embers;
Like dry wood crackling on the grate, it shows
A welcome face the traveler remembers.
A glowing window comforts those who roam,
Reminding them of love, and hearth, and home.
