My two best friends,
Who are plump, but not fat,
Are a cat called Rabbit
And a rabbit named Cat.
But who could imagine
A thing such as that?
To have Cat a rabbit,
And a Rabbit a cat?
Now the cat and
the rabbit
They slid down a rainbow,
Then searched for another,
And each slid down that.
And each picked
a stripe
Of his favorite color,
A slick red for Rabbit;
A smooth blue for Cat.
Cat wore a red straw-hat
And Rabbit wore gloves;
All the while they were
Circled by bluebirds and doves.
The birds sang of
happy,
And Cat sang along,
While Rabbit did author
A pussycat song.
They started at
noonday
At the top of the arc
And slid down the stripes
Until almost dark.
And then with the
sunset
They sat in my lap
As the fire softly hissed
And drops dripped from the tap.
The cat licked his
whiskers,
The rab washed his ears;
And I had no reason
For sadness or tears.
The clock ticked
its rhythm
And chimed the half hour,
While outside the window
There threatened a shower.
But the rainbow
still shines
In the eyes of these two,
With colors of brightest
And lovingest hue.
So I know where
I'll go
When the day breaks again;
When the clouds part, and
Blue sky comes after the rain;
I'll go searching
for rainbows
In my gloves and straw hat,
With my Cat the rabbit,
And Rabbit the cat.
